Message in a Bottle: “Passing on wisdom from fathers to their children
(Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia) – Humans have to learn everything. While we start with a few primitive reflexes, we are dependent on others – first and sometimes foremeost our parents – to prepare us to survive.
“Childhood is an invention of modernity,” says Tyler Hayden, co-editor of the Message in a Bottle series of books. “For most of history, kids lived and worked alongside adults. That’s how they learned. That’s how parents passed on life’s lessons.” Today, according to Hayden, things are different. Parents, especially fathers, have fewer opportunities, or don’t make the time to create the opportunity to pass on wisdom gained through experience.
“My dad taught me a lot,” says Tyler Hayden. “Oh, I didn’t recognize it at the time of course and I’m quite sure that it was hard for him to break the patern of day-to-day “take out the garbage” and “brush your teeth” instruction to talk to me about the important things.” That inspired Hayden to edit and publish a book of wisdom and sound advice from fathers to their offspring.
Together with colleague Dana Phillip Doiron, a father of five ranging in age from five to thirty-five, he is collecting material for A Message in a Bottle: from Fathers to their Children. “Eventually, we see this as a series that gives fathers, mothers, grandparents and others a chance to pass on their wisdom, their experience, and their love.” The first edition, a collection of messages from fathers to their children, will be published in the fall of 2007.
To date, Hayden and Doiron have received submissions from fathers separated from their children through family break-up, prison sentences, and estrangement for various reasons; from father’s to their lost or terminally ill child; as well as messages to new born children and those about to leave the nest.
“Some are poignant; all are distilled nuggets of solid advice,” says Doiron, who is on the sixth rewrite of his own “message” in which he recounts what he learned from his oldest children and how he hopes the younger will benefit.
